Natural cavities for and nesting are scarce, so the Wood Duck enthusiastically uses nest boxes and that are provided for it. If nest boxes are placed too close simultaneously, most females will lays eggs and in the nests of other females. These so-called “dump nests” are capable of containing 40 eggs.
